4 Ways to Strengthen Your Return-to-Work Plan After an Injury: Insights from Pranav
Injury management can be overwhelming - but how you respond can shape the entire recovery journey.
We asked Pranav, our lead consultant, to share four ways employers can strengthen their return-to-work (RTW) approach and improve outcomes for both their people and their business.
Here’s what he said:
The return-to-work process can be stressful and complicated for all parties so it’s important to prioritise trust, timing and communication. The earlier you get involved, the better the outcome. You can’t just hand over a plan and hope for the best, you’ve got to stay engaged, support the person behind the injury, and make sure all stakeholders are on board.
Here’s 4 recommendations for businesses managing it themselves:
Start early
Check in with the injured employee within the first 2 business days. This is a critical time - not just for physical recovery, but for keeping the person connected to their team and workplace. A quick conversation can set the tone for a smoother return.
Tailor duties
Don’t just look at the injury - look at the individual. What can they realistically do right now? Are there any comorbidities or biopsychosocial factors we need to consider? What adjustments will make it easier for them to succeed? A personalised approach makes a real difference.
Involve the team
A return-to-work plan works best when it’s shared. Bring the manager, team, and treatment providers into the loop. Everyone plays a role in supporting the employee’s recovery and that collective buy-in helps prevent setbacks. This kind of collaboration is something we actively manage and it’s one of the reasons we’re the preferred return-to-work partner for many New Zealand businesses.
Review and adjust
No two recoveries look the same. Check in regularly, get feedback from the employee and the team, and adjust the plan if needed. Flexibility keeps things moving forward, even if the path isn’t always straight.
Ideally, it’s all about effective planning and communication. Timely, safe and sustainable return to work isn’t just about ticking a box or rushing someone back on site. It's giving people the support they need, involving the right people at the right time, and keeping recovery moving in a way that works for everyone.
